Emergency Exit Sign Requirements

OSHA and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provide guidelines and standards on exit signage and lighting in buildings. It is important to understand these guidelines when installing exit lighting to ensure compliance as well as keep those in your building safe in the event of an emergency.

  • Number of Emergency Exit Signs. There are many factors that determine the number of exit signs you should have in your commercial property. Multiple regulatory bodies have exit sign standards and requirements, including NFPA, OSHA, and your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). This can make it difficult to determine how many exit signs you should have and where to place them.
  • Emergency Exit Sign Placement. Every door and/or elevator that leads to an exit or exit route should be marked with an exit sign. If there are other pathways and doors along an exit access route that do not lead to an exit, those should be marked with signage indicating they are not an exit. Additionally, if an exit or route to an exit is not obvious, extra exit signage should be used to show the path to the nearest exit.
  • Style & Color for Emergency Exit Signage. OSHA and the NFPA do not have specific style and color requirements, but they do outline that emergency exit signs must be distinct in size and color. They should also be readily visible and contrasting to the areas in which they are placed. It is important to note that sometimes your local AHJ may have more specific requirements. To ensure your signs will satisfy requirements of all applicable regulations, it is best to work with a fire and safety professional.

Emergency Signage Inspections

As outlined in section 7.9.3 of the NPFA Life Safety Code®, all emergency exits and lights must be tested and inspected on both a monthly and annual basis. Failure to comply with these tests could lead to heavy fines in addition to preventing safe exit during an emergency situation.

Emergency Exit Signage Installation in Central Florida

Because emergency exit signs and lighting are so important to everyone’s safety, you want them to be installed properly. Making sure emergency signage is connected to a source of electricity that will work regardless of a power outage or system damage is one critical aspect of the installation process.

Having emergency signage installed by a professional ensures that the lights next to or on top of the exit sign are pointing toward the exit door rather than a wall or ceiling. Properly placed exit signage and lighting can be critical for safe evacuations.
