Where Do You Get Fire Extinguishers Inspected?

Posted on: April 20, 2022

Portable fire extinguishers are often a business’s first line of defense against small fires. And like any lifesaving equipment, you want to make sure they’re operable at all times. Customers often ask us where they can get their fire extinguishers professionally inspected. In nearly all cases, you can have fire extinguisher inspections performed right at your Orlando commercial office or facility.

All commercial fire protection equipment, including portable fire extinguishers, must be periodically inspected and receive routine maintenance to ensure it does its job properly when a fire breaks out. Under OSHA regulations, you should review your business’s fire extinguishers as follows:

  • Monthly visual inspections to ensure fire extinguishers are fully charged, in good operating condition, and ready to use if they’re needed. Anyone can perform the visual inspection if trained to do so. And though keeping a record of visual inspections is suggested, it is not required.
  • Annual professional inspections by a licensed fire protection contractor who verifies all extinguishers are fully pressurized and damage-free. Documentation is also reviewed at this time, and once the inspector confirms it’s complete, it should be stored in a place where appropriate personnel know where and how to access it.

Some fire extinguishers also have six-year maintenance and hydrostatic testing requirements. Your licensed and certified inspector will guide you on which inspections and testing your particular equipment requires.

NFPA 10 Fire Extinguisher Requirements

The NFPA 10 Standard on the Installation of Portable Fire Extinguishers requirements are broken down into three different sections: inspection, maintenance, and testing. Regular monthly inspections at your Orlando business are the easiest way to ensure your extinguishers can be used reliably in an emergency.

At a minimum, monthly inspections should:

  • Verify extinguishers are located in their designated places.
  • Ensure all fire extinguishers are mounted in visible locations or have signage indicating where they’re located.
  • Confirm everyone has easy access to each extinguisher and nothing’s obstructing the pathway.
  • Verify pressure gauges are in the operable (green) range or position.
  • Ensure all extinguishers are fully charged.
  • Confirm pull-pins are intact and tamper-seals aren’t broken or missing.
  • Look for obvious signs of physical damage like dents, leaks, and corrosion. If you discover any equipment is defective, you must immediately replace it.
  • Check inspection tags. They should indicate the last annual inspection was done within the previous 12 months.

Lastly, any wheeled extinguishers should have their tires, wheels, hoses, carriages, and nozzles checked, and non-rechargeable extinguishers should have their push-to-test pressure indicators inspected.

What a Professional Fire Extinguisher Inspection Involves

Under OSHA regulations and as covered in NFPA 10(98), Sec. 4-4, your business must conduct annual fire extinguisher inspections that include a thorough examination and repair, as needed, of all equipment.

Annual fire extinguisher inspections should be performed by a professional fire protection company with the proper tools and training to ensure optimal compliance and make any necessary repairs. During the inspection, the technician will make many of the same checks performed during your monthly reviews.

Once a fire extinguisher passes the annual inspection, it’s verified with a dated certification tag that’s good for one year from the date indicated. Any extinguisher that fails inspection must be immediately repaired or replaced.
